The village of Tambor is located on the horseshoe-shaped Bahia Ballenas  (Whale Bay), which is called that because whales are known to come into to the bay to show themselves off.

Playa Tambor (Tambor Beach) is about 6 or 7 miles from one tip of the horseshoe to the other.  Because it faces east towards the Gulf of Nicoya, the waves are gentle and riptides are rare.  It's quite usual to have miles of beach all to yourself.

The village of Tambor has a number of truly great restaurants and bar/restaurants.

For typical Tico (Costa Rican) food, try the ALKAMAR. Run by Anna and Anselmo, it's menu is fairly small and everything is good!  A good dinner can be had for as little as $7.00 (2012) and a beer is about $2.20.  It is located on the north side of Tambor,

Right opposite the Alkamar is the H&B Restaurant (likewise very good food - more of a chef's kitchen, tonier ambience and decent prices for what you get - especially when compared to North American prices for a similar class of restaurant).

Another excellent Tico-style restaurant is a little farther the north on the way toward the village of Panica (you can get a cab to take you as its location is not immediately apparent to the eye!)  Called EL RANCHO DE LOS GEMELOS (the Twins' Grass Hut??), it is only a few minutes beyond Alkamar and the H&B

The Whale Bay (Bahia Ballena) Yacht Club Restaurant (no club, but decent food     and a lovely setting!) is a ways off the main highway.  Lovely decor but prices are somewhat higher than is usual around Tambor
