Getting there is NOT half the fun with Monteverde! Located to the north of San Jose, the trip to get there is fascinating (shall we say?) Perhaps better to say, challenging? Perhaps better to say you would really like the services of a driver? From San Jose the first 220 kilometres or so is paved and with a driver who knows the road may take about 2 1/2 hours. The second 22 kilometres is not paved. It is reasonably safe (that is, adventurous) for a seasoned Costa Rican driver. With someone who knows the road, that distance takes about 2 1/2 hours. It's not just that the road is rough - there are no guardrails, no shoulders and sheer drops. Sure as anything, ypu don't want to be the driver if you are intent on sightseeing! I am looking forward to my next trip to Monteverde. BUT definitely not at night (no lights on the road). I'VE HEARD THE ROAD FROM ARENAL TO MONTEVERDE IS BETTER! I gather it is a shorter trip - still not for those who get queasy. Think I'll try that road next time - and that way it's Arenal and Monteverde combined. Sounds excellent! Don't let my comments about the road put you off TOO much - tens of thousands go up there and the place is well worth the price of admission! You are unlikely to ever see anything as wonderful anywhere else in the whole world!!
